Hehadsomethinglikeareligiouspassionforroyalgrant;heseemedtolookuponitasasortofsacredswag,andonecouldnotirritatehiminanywaysoquicklyandsosurelyasbyanattackuponthatvenerableinstitution.

IfIventuredtocautiouslyhintthattherewasnotanotherrespectablefamilyinEnglandthatwouldhumbleitselftoholdoutthehat——however,thatisasfarasIevergot;healwayscutmeshortthere,andperemptorily,too.

ButIbelievedIsawmychanceatlast.Iwouldformthiscrackregimentoutofofficersalone——notasingleprivate.Halfofitshouldconsistofnobles,whoshouldfillalltheplacesuptoMajor-General,andservegratisandpaytheirownexpenses;andtheywouldbegladtodothiswhentheyshouldlearnthattherestoftheregimentwouldconsistexclusivelyofprincesoftheblood.TheseprincesofthebloodshouldrangeinrankfromLieutenant-GeneraluptoFieldMarshal,andbegorgeouslysalariedandequippedandfedbythestate.Moreover——andthiswasthemasterstroke——itshouldbedecreedthattheseprincelygrandeesshouldbealwaysaddressedbyastunninglygaudyandawe-compellingtitle(whichIwouldpresentlyinvent),andtheyandtheyonlyinallEnglandshouldbesoaddressed.

Finally,allprincesofthebloodshouldhavefreechoice;jointhatregiment,getthatgreattitle,andrenouncetheroyalgrant,orstayoutandreceiveagrant.Neatesttouchofall:unbornbutimminentprincesofthebloodcouldbeBORNintotheregiment,andstartfair,withgoodwagesandapermanentsituation,uponduenoticefromtheparents.
