Theteaseemedascomfortlessasthedinner,thoughthewarden,whohadhithertoeatennothingallday,devouredtheplatefulofbreadandbutter,unconsciousofwhathewasdoing。

Eleanorhadmadeuphermindtoforcehimtotalktoher,butshehardlyknewhowtocommence:shemustwaittilltheurnwasgone,tilltheservantwouldnolongerbecominginandout。

Atlasteverythingwasgone,andthedrawing-roomdoorwaspermanentlyclosed;thenEleanor,gettingupandgoingroundtoherfather,putherarmroundhisneck,andsaid,’Papa,won’tyoutellmewhatitis?’

’Whatwhatis,mydear?’

’Thisnewsorrowthattormentsyou;Iknowyouareunhappy,papa。’

’Newsorrow!it’snonewsorrow,mydear;wehaveallourcaressometimes’;andhetriedtosmile,butitwasaghastlyfailure;’butIshouldn’tbesodullacompanion;
