Itsohappened,however,thatthepartytowhichMr。Ayrtonbelongedhadbecomegreatlyconcernedinrespectofanelementthathadjustcometothesurfacetostillfurthercomplicatethecourseofpolitics。ThiswastheNonconformistConscience——hithertoa/quantitenegligeable/inthecalculationsoftheleaders,butnowonethatitappearedabsolutelynecessarytotakeintoaccountasafactor。Tobesure,therewereagoodmanypeoplewhoputtheirtonguesintheircheekswhenanymentionwasmadeoftheNonconformistConscience:theysaiditwasnomoretobetakenseriouslythantheSpectorontheBrockenortheAthanasianCreed。Itwasonlythetrickofanelectioneeringagentdesirousofescapingfromanuntenableposition。

Therewereotherpersons,however(mostlyNonconformists),whowerefoundreadytodeclarethattheNonconformistConsciencewasaGreatandLivingTruth。Theonlypointuponwhichstatesmenofallpartieswereagreedwasthatitwasworthpurchasing。TheNonconformiststhemselves,uponwhomtheGreatandLivingTruthwassprung,hadnonotionatfirstthatitcouldbeturnedintoanegotiablesecurityoccupyingashighaplaceinthemarketas,say,Argentinebonds。Butitdidnottakethemverylongtofindoutthatevenanabstractionsuchasthiscouldbeturnedtogoodaccountbydiscreetmaneuvering。
