Andso,asIhavealreadyremarked,ifIwererequiredtosuperintendaBaconShakespearecontroversy,Iwouldnarrowthematterdowntoasinglequestiontheonlyone,sofarasthepreviouscontroversieshaveinformedme,concerningwhichillustriousexpertsofunimpeachablecompetencyhavetestified:

ThePlaysandPoemsofShakespearesupplyampleevidencethattheirauthornotonlyhadaveryextensiveandaccurateknowledgeoflaw,butthathewaswellacquaintedwiththemannersandcustomsofmembersoftheInnsofCourtandwithlegallifegenerally。
