Butwhenshewoke,inthebrilliantCaliforniamornings,shewouldliestillafewmomentslookingatthefaceonthewallandthefaceonthebureau;woulddrawthelittlepictureoutfromunderherpillowandkissit,wouldsaytoherselfforthethousandthtime,"Itisforhim,too。"

Failurehadnotdiscouragedher,butincreasingsuccesswithallitsstimulusandsatisfactioncalledformoreandmorepower。Hermindwasbusyforeseeing,arranging,providingforemergencies;andthenthewholethingslippedawayfromher,shedroppedherheaduponherarmforamoment,ontheedgeoftheteatable,andwishedforRoss。

Fromdownthestreetandupthestreetatthismoment,twomenwerecoming;bothyoung,bothtall,bothgoodlooking,bothapparentlyapproachingUnionHouse。Oneofthemwasthenearer,andhisfootsoonsoundedonthewoodenstep。Theotherstoppedandlookedinashopwindow。

Dianthastartedup,cameforward,——itwasMr。Eltwood。Shehadavaguesenseofdisappointment,butreceivedhimcordially。Hestoodthere,hishatoff,holdingherhandforalongmoment,andgazingatherwithevidentadmiration。Theyturnedandsatdownintheshadowofthereed—curtainedcorner。

Themanattheshopwindowturned,too,andwentaway。

Mr。EltwoodhadbeenawarmfriendandcordialsupporterfromtheepochoftheClub—splittingspeech。Hehadhelpedmateriallyintheslow,up—hilldaysofthegirl’seffort,withfaithandkindwords。Hehadmetthemother’scomingwithmostfriendlyadvances,andMrs。Bellfoundherselfmuchathomeinhisliberallittlechurch。
