MostofthememberswerequitecontenttofollowtheleadofthesolidlyestablishedladiesofOrchardAvenue;especiallyasthisleadershipconsistedmainlyinthepursuanceofamasterlyinactivity。Whenwealthandaristocracycombinewiththatcommoninertiawhichwedignifyas"conservatism"theyexertapowerfulinfluenceinthegreatartofsittingstill。

Neverthelessthereweremanyalertandconscientiouswomeninthislargemembership,andwhenMissEagersonheldthefloor,andurgedupontheclubsomeactiveassistanceinthemarchofevents,itneededallMrs。

Dankshire’sgeneralshiptokeepthemcontentwithmarkingtime。

Onthisauspiciousoccasion,however,bothsideswereagreedininterestandapproval。Herewasasubjectappealingtoeverywomanpresent,andeverymanbutsuchfewasmerely"boarded";eventheyhadmemoriesandhopesconcerningthisquestion。

Perhapsitistheirmorefrequentpracticeofreligiousrites,perhapstheirdevoutacceptanceofsocialrulingsandthedictatesoffashion,perhapsthelifelongreiteranceofsmalldutiesathome,orallthesethingstogether,whichmakeswomensoseriouslyletter—perfectinparliamentryusage。Butthesestatelyceremonieswereendedincourseoftime,andMrs。Dankshireroseagain,evenmoresolemnthanbefore,andcameforwardmajestically。

"Members———andguests,"shesaidimpressively,"thisisanoccasionwhichbringspridetotheheartofeverymemberoftheHomeandCultureClub。Asournameimplies,thisClubisformedtoservetheinterestsofTheHome——thoseinterestswhichstandfirst,Itrust,ineveryhumanheart。"

Agrowingrustleofdisapprovalbegantomakeitselffelt,whichincreasedasshewentontoexplainhowthepositionofthehousemaidisasurvivaloftheancientstatusofwomanslavery,thefamilywiththemaleheadandthegroupofservilewomen。

"Thekeynoteofallourdifficultyinthisrelationisthatwedemandcelibacyofourdomesticservants,"saidDiantha。

Amurmuraroseatthisstatement,butshecontinuedcalmly:

Then,aswhispersandsporadiclittlespurtsofangrytalkincreased,theclearquietvoicewentontostatethatthislastmatter,thepositionofastrangeyounggirlinourhomes,wasofitselfasourceofmuchofthedifficultyofthesituation。
