Tom’sbehaviorathomehadbeenperfectduringtheentireweek。

Finallyshestartedup,andsaidshehadfoundawayout。Tomwasalmostsuffocatedbythejoyofthissuddengoodnews。Roxanasaid:

TheboatboreRoxyawayfromSt。Louisatfourintheafternoon,andshestoodonthelowerguardabaftthepaddleboxandwatchedTomthroughabluroftearsuntilhemeltedintothethrongofpeopleanddisappeared;thenshelookednomore,butsatthereonacoilofcablecryingtillfarintothenight。

Whenshewenttoherfoulsteeragebunkatlast,betweentheclashingengines,itwasnottosleep,butonlytowaitforthemorning,and,waiting,grieve。

Hescoffedatthemasadventures,mountebanks,sideshowriffraff,dimemuseumfreaks;heassailedtheirshowytitleswithmeasurelessderision;hesaidtheywereback—alleybarbersdisguisedasnobilities,peanutpeddlersmasqueradingasgentlemen,organ—grindersbereftoftheirbrothermonkey。

Hiswhistlefadedoutandhefeltuneasy。Themanturnedaround,awreckofshabbyoldclothes,soddenwithrainandalla—drip,andshowedablackfaceunderanoldslouchhat。Tomwasfrightened。

Hetriedtoorderthemanout,butthewordsrefusedtocome,andtheothermangotthestart。Hesaid,inalowvoice:

Tomsunkinaheaponachair,andgaspedout:
