Itspreadsoutbelowinonegreatmosaicofturquoiseandamberandemerald,wherethemilesseemlikeinches,andwherehisfield-glasssweepsonepanoramicpictureofahundredmilesormore。

JustbelowisPasadenaandLosAngeles。TothewestwardperhapsfortymilesisthebluestretchofthePacificOcean,onwestwardthefaintoutlinesofCatalinaIslands。Theoceanseemssocloseonecouldthrowapebbleoverintoit。Howamountaindoesreducedistances。Youthrowthepebbleanditfallsuponyourtoes!

Thegloryofthesunsetfilledseaandskywithflamesofgoldandfountainsofrainbows。Suchasunsetfromthemountain-sideisapromiseofheaven。

Theshadowsofsunsetwidenedoverthevalley。Presentlyallthevalleywasblackwiththeshadow。Itwasnightdownthere。Thepeopleweresaying,"Thesundoesn’tshine。"ButitwasnotnightwhereIstood。Iwasfartherupthemountain。Iturnedandlookeduptothesummit。ThebeamsofthesettingsunwereyetgildingMountLowe’ssummit。Itwasnightdowninthevalley,butitwasdayonthemountaintop!
