IfBrowning’sideaofthequickening,theregeneration,therectificationofpersonality,throughahigherpersonality,befullycomprehended,hisideaofthegreatfunctionofArt,asanintermediateagencyofpersonality,willbecomeplain。

Toemphasizethelatterideamaybesaidtobetheultimatepurposeofhismasterpiece,`TheRingandtheBook’。

ThecomplexityofthecircumstancesinvolvedintheRomanmurdercase,adaptsitadmirablytothepoet’spurpose——namely,toexhibittheswervingsofhumanjudgmentinspiteofitself,andtheconditionsuponwhichtherectificationofthatjudgmentdepends。

Thismustbetaken,however,asonlythearticulation,theframework,ofthegreatpoem。Itisricherinmaterials,ofthemostvariedcharacter,thananyotherlongpoeminexistence。
