Trewehasrecentlyattractedtheattentionofamuchwiderpublicthanhadhithertoknownhim,byhisnewvolumeofverse,mostlyofanimpassionedkind,entitled“LyricstoaWomanUnknown,“whichhasbeenalreadyfavourablynoticedinthesepagesfortheextraordinarygamutoffeelingittraverses,andwhichhasbeenmadethesubjectofasevere,ifnotferocious,criticisminthe——Review。Itissupposed,thoughnotcertainlyknown,thatthearticlemayhavepartiallyconducedtothesadact,asacopyofthereviewinquestionwasfoundonhiswriting-table;andhehasbeenobservedtobeinasomewhatdepressedstateofmindsincethecritiqueappeared。’

Thencamethereportoftheinquest,atwhichthefollowingletterwasread,ithavingbeenaddressedtoafriendatadistance:-

Ellasatforawhileasifstunned,thenrushedintotheadjoiningchamberandflungherselfuponherfaceonthebed。

ShewrotetothelandladyatSolentseainthethirdperson,inassubduedastyleasshecouldcommand,enclosingapostalorderforasovereign,andinformingMrs。HooperthatMrs。Marchmillhadseeninthepapersthesadaccountofthepoet’sdeath,andhavingbeen,asMrs。Hooperwasaware,muchinterestedinMr。TreweduringherstayatCoburgHouse,shewouldbeobligedifMrs。Hoopercouldobtainasmallportionofhishairbeforehiscoffinwascloseddown,andsenditherasamemorialofhim,asalsothephotographthatwasintheframe。

Bythereturn-postaletterarrivedcontainingwhathadbeenrequested。Ellaweptovertheportraitandsecureditinherprivatedrawer;thelockofhairshetiedwithwhiteribbonandputinherbosom,whenceshedrewitandkissediteverynowandtheninsomeunobservednook。
