theBeaconStreetofRochester,whateveritwascalled。Theysaiditwasanightandaplaceforlovers,fornonebutlovers,forloversnewlyplighted,andtheymadebelievetobemoanthemselvesthat,holdeachotherdearastheywould,theexaltation,thethrill,thegloryoftheiryoungerlovewasgone。Someofthehouseshadgardenedspacesaboutthem,fromwhichstole,likebreathsofsweetestandsaddestregret,theperfumeofmidsummerflowers,——thedespairoftheroseforthebud。Astheypassedacertainhouse,asongflutteredoutoftheopenwindowandceased,thepianowarbledatthefinalrushoffingersoveritschords,andtheysawherwithherfingersrestinglightlyonthekeys,andhergracefulheadliftedtolookintohis;theysawhimwithhisarmyetstretchedacrosstotheleavesofmusichehadbeenturning,andhisfaceloweredtomeethergaze。

TheonlydefiniteassociationwithitinourmindsisthetragicallyromanticthoughtthathereSamPatchmethisfate。“
