Itwassomethingbesidestheriverthatmadetheairsomuchmoresufferablethanithadbeen。Overthecity,sinceourfriendshadcomeaboardtheboat,ablackcloudhadgatheredandnowhunglowuponit,whilethewindfromthefaceofthewatertookthedustintheneighboringstreets,andfrolickeditaboutthehouse-tops,andinthefacesofthearrivingpassengers,who,asthemomentofdeparturedrewnear,appearedinconstantlyincreasingnumbersandingreatervariety,withnotonlythetrepidationofgoinguponthem,butalsowiththeelectricalexcitementpeoplefeelbeforeatempest。

Thebreastoftheblackcloudwasnowzigzaggedfrommomenttomomentbylightning,andclapsofdeafeningthunderbrokefromit。Atlastthelongenduranceofthedaywasspent,andoutofitsconvulsionburstfloodsofrain,againandagainsweepingthepromenade-deckwherethepeoplesat,anddrivingthemdisconsolateintothesaloon。Theairwasdarkenedasbynight,andwithmanyregretsforthevanishingprospect,mingledwithasenseofrelieffromtheheat,ourfriendsfelttheboattrembleawayfromhermooringsandsetforthuponhertrip。

Theirownsatisfaction,indeed,wassointerestingtotheminthisobjectivelight,thattheyhadlittledesiretoturnfromitscontemplationtothepeoplearoundthem;andwhenatlasttheydidso,itwasstillwithlingeringglancesofself-recognitionandenjoyment。Theydivinedrightlythatoneofthemainconditionsoftheirpresentfelicitywasthefactthattheyhadseensomuchoftimeandoftheworld,thattheyhadnolongeranydesiretotakebeholdingeyes,ortomakeanysortofimpressivefigure,andtheyunderstoodthattheirprosperousloveaccountedasmuchasyearsandtravelforthisresult。Iftheyhadhadaloftieropinionofthemselves,theirindifferencetoothersmighthavemadethemoffensive;butwiththeirmodestestimateoftheirownvalueintheworld,theycouldhaveallthecomfortofself-sufficiency,withoutitsvulgarity。
