Theylaidonthetablethreefive-kopeckpiecesandwentoutofthetavern;theoldmanlookedimmovablystraightbeforehimasthoughhewereblind,andperfecttrustfulnesswaswrittenonhisface;butasVasilisacameoutofthetavernshewavedangrilyatthedog,andsaidangrily:

“Ugh,theplague。“

Theoldwomandidnotsleepallnight;shewasdisturbedbythoughts,andatdaybreakshegotup,saidherprayers,andwenttothestationtosendofftheletter。

Goingintotheroom,Andreygavehiswifetheletterandsaid:

Thenhewalkedoutagainwithouttakinghiseyesfromthepaper。

AndreyHrisanfitchreturnedtohisroomtosmokealittletilltherewasanotherringatthedoor,andYefimyaceasedspeaking,subsided,andwipedhereyes,thoughherlipswerestillquivering。Shewasverymuchfrightenedofhim——oh,howfrightenedofhim!Shetrembledandwasreducedtoterrorbythesoundofhissteps,bythelookinhiseyes,anddarednotutterawordinhispresence。

Gusev,adischargedsoldier,satupinhishammockandsaidinanundertone:

Thenondescriptindividualwhomhewasaddressing,andwhomeveryoneintheship’shospitalcalledPavelIvanitch,wassilent,asthoughhehadnotheard。
