Nevertheless，thesortofscientificreputationwhichthesediscreditableperformanceshavegainedforM。Figuieramonganuncriticalpublicissuchastojustifyusindevotingafewparagraphstoabook[13]which，onitsownmerits，isunworthyofanynoticewhatever。“TheTo-morrowofDeath“——ifoneweretoputhistrustinthetranslator’sprefatorynote——discussesagravequestionupon“purelyscientificmethods。“Wearegladtoseethisremark，becauseitshowswhatnotionsmaybeentertainedbypersonsofaverageintelligencewithreferenceto“scientificmethods。“Those——andtheyaremany——whovaguelythinkthatscienceissomethingdifferentfromcommon-sense，andthatanybookisscientificwhichtalksaboutperiheliaandasymptotesandcetacea，willfindtheirvaguenotionsherewellcorroborated。
