ByadviceoftheinspectorIdoubledthereward。

Fourmoredulldaysfollowed。Thencameabitterblowtothepoor,hard—workingdetectives——thejournalistsdeclinedtoprinttheirtheories,andcoldlysaid,"Giveusarest。"

Twoweeksaftertheelephant’sdisappearanceIraisedtherewardtoseventy—fivethousanddollarsbytheinspector’sadvice。Itwasagreatsum,butIfeltthatIwouldrathersacrificemywholeprivatefortunethanlosemycreditwithmygovernment。Nowthatthedetectiveswereinadversity,thenewspapersturneduponthem,andbegantoflingthemoststingingsarcasmsatthem。Thisgavetheminstrelsanidea,andtheydressedthemselvesasdetectivesandhuntedtheelephantonthestageinthemostextravagantway。Thecaricaturistsmadepicturesofdetectivesscanningthecountrywithspy—glasses,whiletheelephant,attheirbacks,stoleapplesoutoftheirpockets。Andtheymadeallsortsofridiculouspicturesofthedetectivebadge——youhaveseenthatbadgeprintedingoldonthebackofdetectivenovels,nodoubtitisawide—staringeye,withthelegend,"WENEVERSLEEP。"Whendetectivescalledforadrink,thewould—befacetiousbarkeeperresurrectedanobsoleteformofexpressionandsaid,"Willyouhaveaneye—opener?"

Alltheairwasthickwithsarcasms。
