Thereweremanyhuge,shapelessobjectsineachcompartmentwhichwereconsideredtohavebeenlivingcreaturesatonetime,thoughnowthethinbrownskinwasshrunkenandloose,andrattledwhendisturbed。Spiderswerehereingreatnumber,andtheircobwebs,stretchedinalldirectionsandwreathingthegreatskinnydeadtogether,wereapleasantspectacle,sincetheyinspiredwithlifeandwholesomecheerascenewhichwouldotherwisehavebroughttothemindonlyasenseofforsakennessanddesolation。Informationwassoughtofthesespiders,butinvain。Theywereofadifferentnationalityfromthosewiththeexpedition,andtheirlanguageseemedbutamusical,meaninglessjargon。Theywereatimid,gentlerace,butignorant,andheathenishworshipersofunknowngods。

Thiswasthefirstsuccessfulandsatisfactorytranslationthathadbeenmadeofthemysteriouscharacterletbehindhimbyextinctman,anditgaveProfessorWoodlousesuchreputationthatatonceeveryseatoflearninginhisnativelandconferredadegreeofthemostillustriousgradeuponhim,anditwasbelievedthatifhehadbeenasoldierandhadturnedhissplendidtalentstotheexterminationofaremotetribeofreptiles,thekingwouldhaveennobledhimandmadehimrich。Andthis,too,wastheoriginofthatschoolofscientistscalledManologists,whosespecialtyisthedecipheringoftheancientrecordsoftheextinctbirdtermedMan。[ForitisnowdecidedthatManwasabirdandnotareptile。],ButProfessorWoodlousebeganandremainedchiefofthese,foritwasgrantedthatnotranslationswereeversofreefromerrorashis。

Theviewshavingbeencompleted,itwasnowconsideredsafetoloadthepreciousMonumentitselfuponthebacksoffourofthelargestTortoisesandsendithometotheking’smuseum,whichwasdone;andwhenitarriveditwasreceivedwithenormousMatandescortedtoitsfutureabiding-placebythousandsofenthusiasticcitizens,KingBullfrogXVI。

Thegrowingrigoroftheweatherwasnowadmonishingthescientiststoclosetheirlaborsforthepresent,sotheymadepreparationstojourneyhomeward。ButeventheirlastdayamongtheCavernsborefruit;foroneofthescholarsfoundinanout-of-the-waycorneroftheMuseumor“BurialPlace“amoststrangeandextraordinarything。ItwasnothinglessthanadoubleMan-Birdlashedtogetherbreasttobreastbyanaturalligament,andlabeledwiththeuntranslatablewords,“SiameseTwins。”

AndneartheDoubleMan-Birdwasfoundwhatwasplainlyanancientrecordofhis,markeduponnumberlesssheetsofathinwhitesubstanceandboundtogether。AlmostthefirstglancethatProfessorWoodlousethrewintoitrevealedthisfollowingsentence,whichheinstantlytranslatedandlaidbeforethescientists,inatremble,anditupliftedeverysoultherewithexultationandastonishment:

Whenthegreatofficialreportoftheexpeditionappeared,theabovesentenceborethiscomment:
