Herethelaststandwasmade。Stepbysteptheyheldthestairs,tillatlengththerewereleftupontheirfeetonlyTua,AstiandMermes,herhusband,whowassorelywoundedinmanyplaces。AtthelittlelandingbetweentheroomsoftheQueenandAstiwhiletheassailantspausedamoment,theCaptainMermes,madwithgriefandpain,turnedandkissedhiswife。NexthebowedbeforetheQueen,saying:

Nowwhenthesoldiersheardthesedreadfulwords,onebyonetheyturnedandcreptdownthestairs,tillatlasttherewereleftuponthepylonroofonlytheQueen,Asticrouchingatherfeet,andthemonstrousAbi,heruncle。

Helookedather,andthricehetriedtospeakbutfailed,forthewordschokedinhisthroat。Afourthtimehetried,andtheycamehoarsely:
