Wefollowed。Bending,andtreadingheavily,hewentupstairs。HestruckablowonPasiance’sdoor。"Letmein!"hesaid。IdrewDanintomybedroom。Thekeywasslowlyturned,herdoorwasflungopen,andthereshestoodinherdressing—gown,acandleinherhand,herfacecrimson,andoh!soyoung,withitsshort,crisphairandroundcheeks。Theoldman——likeagiantinfrontofher——raisedhishands,andlaidthemonhershoulders。

"What’sthis?You——you’vehadamaninyourroom?"

Hereyesdidnotdrop。

"Yes,"shesaid。Dangaveagroan。

"Who?"

"ZacharyPearse,"sheansweredinavoicelikeabell。

Hegaveheroneawfulshake,droppedhishands,thenraisedthemasthoughtostrikeher。Shelookedhimintheeyes;hishandsdropped,andhetoogroaned。AsfarasIcouldsee,herfacenevermoved。
