Whereforetheseblood—menhereservedwhilenowthattheymight，whenallhisenginesprovedineffectual，ashislastandsurecardbeplayedagainstthetownofMansoul。

Now，whenthetownsmenhadreceivedthisred—hotsummons，itbegatinthematpresentsomechangingandinterchangingthoughts;buttheyjointlyagreed，inlessthanhalfanhour，tocarrythesummonstothePrince，thewhichtheydidwhentheyhadwritatthebottomofit，’Lord，saveMansoulfrombloodymen！’

Sohetookit，andlookeduponit，andconsideredit，andtooknoticealsoofthatshortpetitionthatthemenofMansoulhadwrittenatthebottomofit，andcalledtohimthenobleCaptainCredence，andbidhimgoandtakeCaptainPatiencewithhim，andgoandtakecareofthatsideofMansoulthatwasbeleagueredbytheblood—men。Sotheywentanddidastheywerecommanded:theCaptainCredencewentandtookCaptainPatience，andtheybothsecuredthatsideofMansoulthatwasbesiegedbytheblood—men。

Nowwhentheyweretaken，hadbeforethePrince，andexamined，hefoundthemtobeofthreeseveralcounties，thoughtheyallcameoutofoneland。

Forthefirstofthese，namely，theythatcameoutofBlind—

man—shire，whentheysawwheretheywere，andagainstwhomtheyhadfought，theytrembledandcried，astheystoodbeforehim;andasmanyoftheseasaskedhimmercy，hetouchedtheirlipswithhisgoldensceptre。

TheythatcameoutofBlind—zeal—shire，theydidnotastheirfellowsdid;fortheypleadedthattheyhadarighttodowhattheydid，becauseMansoulwasatownwhoselawsandcustomswerediversefromallthatdweltthereabouts。Veryfewofthesecouldbebroughttoseetheirevil;butthosethatdid，andaskedmercy，theyalsoobtainedfavour。

Now，theythatcameoutofthetownofMalice，thatisinthecountyofEnvy，theyneitherwept，nordisputed，norrepented，butstoodgnawingtheirtonguesbeforehimforanguishandmadness，becausetheycouldnothavetheirwilluponMansoul。Nowtheselast，withallthoseoftheothertwosortsthatdidnotunfeignedlyaskpardonfortheirfaults，—thosehemadetoenterintosufficientbondtoanswerforwhattheyhaddoneagainstMansoul，andagainstherKing，atthegreatandgeneralassizestobeholdenforourLordtheKing，wherehehimselfshouldappointforthecountryandkingdomofUniverse。Sotheybecameboundeachmanforhimself，tocomein，whencalledupon，toanswerbeforeourLordtheKingforwhattheyhaddoneasbefore。

AndthusmuchconcerningthissecondarmythatwassentbyDiabolustooverthrowMansoul。

ButtherewerethreeofthosethatcamefromthelandofDoubting，who，aftertheyhadwanderedandrangedthecountryawhile，andperceivedthattheyhadescaped，weresohardyastothrustthemselves，knowingthatyettherewereinthetownDiabolonians，—Isay，theyweresohardyastothrustthemselvesintoMansoulamongthem。（Three，didIsay？I

Thesoldierwasamanthatmylordhadmuchconfidencein，andthatheloveddearly;andthatbothbecausehewasamanofcourage，andalsoamanthatwasunweariedinseekingafterDiabolonianstoapprehendthem。

Nowthisman，asItoldyou，heardallthetalkthatwasbetweenoldEvil—QuestioningandtheseDiabolonians;

Trueman，thegaoler，andcommanded，andhedidputtheminward。Thisdone，myLordMayorwasacquaintedinthemorningwithwhatmyLordWillbewillhaddoneovernight，andhislordshiprejoicedmuchatthenews，notonlybecausethereweredoubtersapprehended，butbecausethatoldEvil—

ThenspakemyLordWillbewill，forhewasoneofthewitnesses:’Mylord，andyouthehonourablebenchandmagistratesofthetownofMansoul，youallhaveheardwithyourearsthattheprisoneratthebarhasdeniedhisname，andsothinkstoshiftfromthechargeoftheindictment。

Healsoaskedwhatnumberstherewereofthem;andtheytoldhimtenthousandmen。Hethenaskedthem，whytheymadenomoremanlyassaultuponMansoul;andtheytoldhim:sohecalledtheirgeneralcoward，formarchingoffwhenheshouldhavefoughtforhisprince。Further，thisoldEvil—
