Bothofherhandsleapedtohercheeks——shegrewredandthenwhite。Sheroseslowlyandmovedbackwardfromhim,staringathim,atfirstincredulously,thenwithanintenseperplexitymoreandmoreluminousinherwideeyes;itwaslikeaspokenquestion。Theroomfilledwithstrangenessinthelongsilence——thetwoweresostrangetoeachother。Atlastshesaid:

BibbsandhisfatherweregonewhenMrs。Sheridanwoke,thenextmorning,andshehadadrearyday。ShemissedEdithwoefully,andsheworriedaboutwhatmightbetakingplaceintheSheridanBuilding。ShefeltthateverythingdependedonhowBibbs"tookhold,"anduponherhusband"sreturnintheeveningsheseizeduponthefirstopportunitytoaskhimhowthingshadgone。
