Theladies"chatcametoasuddenendjustthere,forbythetimeJamiehadbeenfishedoutofahogshead,thesteamerhoveinsightandeverythingelsewasforgotten。Asitswungslowlyaroundtoenterthedock,aboyishvoiceshouted,"Theresheis!IseeherandUncleandPhebe!HoorayforCousinRose!"AndthreesmallcheersweregivenwithawillbyJamieashestoodonapostwavinghisarmslikeawindmillwhilehisbrotherheldontothetailofhisjacket。
Yes,theretheywereUncleAlecswinginghishatlikeaboy,withPhebesmilingandnoddingononesideandRosekissingbothhandsdelightedlyontheotherassherecognizedfamiliarfacesandheardfamiliarvoiceswelcomingherhome。

Duringtheconfusionthatreignedforamomentasthesteamersettledtohermoorings,Roselookeddownintothefourfacesupturnedtohersandseemedtoreadinthemsomethingthatbothpleasedandpainedher。
Itwasonlyaglance,andherowneyeswerefull,butthroughthemistofhappytearsshereceivedtheimpressionthatArchiewasaboutthesame,thatMachaddecidedlyimproved,andthatsomethingwasamisswithCharlie。
Therewasnotimeforobservation,however,forinamomenttheshorewardrushbegan,andbeforeshecouldgrasphertravelingbag,Jamiewasclingingtoherlikeanecstaticyoungbear。Shewaswithdifficultyreleasedfromhisembracetofallintothegentleronesoftheeldercousins,whotookadvantageofthegeneralexcitementtowelcomebothbloominggirlswithaffectionateimpartiality。Thenthewandererswereborneashoreinatriumphalprocession,whileJamiedancedrapturousjigsbeforethemevenonthegangway。
ArchieremainedtohelphisunclegettheluggagethroughtheCustomHouse,andtheothersescortedthedamselshome。Nosoonerweretheyshutupinacarriage,however,thananewandcuriousconstraintseemedtofallupontheyoungpeople,fortheyrealized,allatonce,thattheirformerplaymatesweremenandwomennow。Fortunately,Jamiewasquitefreefromthisfeelingofrestraintand,sittingbodkinwisebetweentheladies,tookallsortsoflibertieswiththemandtheirbelongings。
