"Andyet,"saidCaptainDalgetty,"mysecondandgreatestdifficultyremainsbehind;for,althoughIholditameanandsordidthingforasoldadotohavenothinginhismouthbutpayandgelt,likethebasecullions,theGermanlanz—knechts,whomI

mentionedbefore;andalthoughIwillmaintainitwithmysword,thathonouristobepreferredbeforepay,freequarters,andarrears,yet,EXCONTRARIO,asoldier"spaybeingthecounterpartofhisengagementofservice,itbecomesawiseandconsideratecavaliertoconsiderwhatremunerationheistoreceiveforhisservice,andfromwhatfundsitistobepaid。Andtruly,mylord,fromwhatIcanseeandhear,theConventionarethepurse—

masters。TheHighlanders,indeed,maybekeptinhumour,byallowingthemtostealcattle;andfortheIrishes,yourlordshipandyournobleassociatesmay,accordingtothepracticeofthewarsinsuchcases,paythemasseldomoraslittleasmaysuityourpleasureorconvenience;butthesamemodeoftreatmentdothnotapplytoacavalierlikeme,whomustkeepuphishorses,servants,arms,andequipage,andwhoneithercan,norwill,gotowarfareuponhisowncharges。"

Anderson,thedomesticwhohadbeforespokennowrespectfullyaddressedhismaster。——"Ithink,mylord,"hesaid,"that,underyourlordship"sfavour,IcouldsaysomethingtoremoveCaptainDalgetty"ssecondobjectionalso。Heasksuswherewearetocollectourpay;now,inmypoormind,theresourcesareasopentousastotheCovenanters。Theytaxthecountryaccordingtotheirpleasure,anddilapidatetheestatesoftheKing"sfriends;

now,wereweonceintheLowlands,withourHighlandersandourIrishatourbacks,andourswordsinourhands,wecanfindmanyafattraitor,whoseill—gottenwealthshallfillourmilitarychestandsatisfyoursoldiery。Besides,confiscationswillfallinthick;and,ingivingdonationsofforfeitedlandstoeveryadventurouscavalierwhojoinshisstandard,theKingwillatoncerewardhisfriendsandpunishhisenemies。Inshort,hethatjoinstheseRoundheaddogsmaygetsomemiserablepittanceofpay——hethatjoinsourstandardhasachancetobeknight,lord,orearl,ifluckservehim。"

"Haveyoueverserved,mygoodfriend?"saidtheCaptaintothespokesman。

"Alittle,sir,intheseourdomesticquarrels,"answeredtheman,modestly。

"ButneverinGermanyortheLowCountries?"saidDalgetty。

"Ineverhadthehonour,"answeredAnderson。

"Iprofess,"saidDalgetty,addressingLordMenteith,"yourlordship"sservanthasasensible,natural,prettyideaofmilitarymatters;somewhatirregular,though,andsmellsalittletoomuchofsellingthebear"sskinbeforehehashuntedhim。——I

"Doso,Captain,"saidLordMenteith;"youwillhavethenighttothinkofit,forwearenownearthehouse,whereIhopetoensureyouahospitablereception。"

Onceonatime,nomatterwhen,SomeGlunimiesmetinaglen;

AsdeftandtightaseverworeAdurk,atarge,andaclaymore,Shorthose,andbeltedplaidortrews,InUist,Lochaber,Skye,orLewes,Orcover"dhardheadwithhisbonnet;

Hadyoubutknownthem,youwouldownit。MESTON。

Ahillwasnowbeforethetravellers,coveredwithanancientforestofScottishfirs,thetopmostofwhich,flingingtheirscathedbranchesacrossthewesternhorizon,gleamedruddyinthesettingsun。Inthecentreofthiswoodrosethetowers,orratherthechimneys,ofthehouse,orcastle,asitwascalled,destinedfortheendoftheirjourney。

Asusualatthatperiod,oneortwohigh—ridgednarrowbuildings,intersectingandcrossingeachother,formedtheCORPSDELOGIS。

Aprotectingbartizanortwo,withtheadditionofsmallturretsattheangles,muchresemblingpepper—boxes,hadprocuredforDarnlinvarachthedignifiedappellationofacastle。Itwassurroundedbyalowcourt—yardwall,withinwhichweretheusualoffices。

Asthetravellersapproachedmorenearly,theydiscoveredmarksofrecentadditionstothedefencesoftheplace,whichhadbeensuggested,doubtless,bytheinsecurityofthosetroublesometimes。Additionalloop—holesformusketrywerestruckoutindifferentpartsofthebuilding,andofitssurroundingwall。

Thewindowshadjustbeencarefullysecuredbystancheonsofiron,crossingeachotherathwartandend—long,likethegratesofaprison。Thedoorofthecourt—yardwasshut;anditwasonlyaftercautiouschallengethatoneofitsleaveswasopenedbytwodomestics,bothstrongHighlanders,andbothunderarms,likeBitiasandPandarusintheAEneid,readytodefendtheentranceifaughthostilehadventuredanintrusion。

Whenthetravellerswereadmittedintothecourt,theyfoundadditionalpreparationsfordefence。Thewallswerescaffoldedfortheuseoffire—arms,andoneortwoofthesmallguns,calledsackers,orfalcons,weremountedattheanglesandflankingturrets。

Moredomestics,bothintheHighlandandLowlanddress,instantlyrushedfromtheanteriorofthemansion,andsomehastenedtotakethehorsesofthestrangers,whileotherswaitedtomarshalthemawayintothedwelling—house。ButCaptainDalgettyrefusedtheprofferedassistanceofthosewhowishedtorelievehimofthechargeofhishorse。"Itismycustom,myfriends,toseeGustavus(forsoIhavecalledhim,aftermyinvinciblemaster)

accommodatedmyself;weareoldfriendsandfellow—travellers,andasIoftenneedtheuseofhislegs,Ialwayslendhiminmyturntheserviceofmytongue,tocallforwhateverhehasoccasionfor;"andaccordinglyhestrodeintothestableafterhissteedwithoutfartherapology。

NeitherLordMenteithnorhisattendantspaidthesameattentiontotheirhorses,but,leavingthemtotheprofferedcareoftheservantsoftheplace,walkedforwardintothehouse,whereasortofdarkvaultedvestibuledisplayed,amongothermiscellaneousarticles,ahugebarreloftwo—pennyale,besidewhichwererangedtwoorthreewoodenqueichs,orbickers,ready,itwouldappear,fortheserviceofwhoeverthoughtpropertoemploythem。LordMenteithappliedhimselftothespigot,drankwithoutceremony,andthenhandedthestouptoAnderson,whofollowedhismaster"sexample,butnotuntilhehadflungoutthedropofalewhichremained,andslightlyrinsedthewoodencup。

"Whatthedeil,man,"saidanoldHighlandservantbelongingtothefamily,"canshenodrinkafterherainmasterwithoutwashingthecupandspillingtheale,andbetamnedtoher!"

"IwasbredinFrance,"answeredAnderson,"wherenobodydrinksafteranotheroutofthesamecup,unlessitbeafterayounglady。"

"Theteil"sintheirnicety!"saidDonald;"andifthealebegude,fatthewauris"tthatanotherman"sbeard"sbeeninthequeichbeforeye?"

Anderson"scompaniondrankwithoutobservingtheceremonywhichhadgivenDonaldsomuchoffence,andbothofthemfollowedtheirmasterintothelow—archedstonehall,whichwasthecommonrendezvousofaHighlandfamily。Alargefireofpeatsinthehugechimneyattheupperendshedadimlightthroughtheapartment,andwasrenderednecessarybythedamp,bywhich,evenduringthesummer,theapartmentwasrendereduncomfortable。

Twentyorthirtytargets,asmanyclaymores,withdirks,andplaids,andguns,bothmatch—lockandfire—lock,andlong—bows,andcross—bows,andLochaberaxes,andcoatsofplatearmour,andsteelbonnets,andheadpieces,andthemoreancienthaborgeons,orshirtsofreticulatedmail,withhoodandsleevescorrespondingtoit,allhunginconfusionaboutthewalls,andwouldhaveformedamonth"samusementtoamemberofamodernantiquariansociety。Butsuchthingsweretoofamiliar,toattractmuchobservationonthepartofthepresentspectators。

Therewasalargeclumsyoakentable,whichthehastyhospitalityofthedomesticwhohadbeforespoken,immediatelyspreadwithmilk,butter,goat—milkcheese,aflagonofbeer,andaflaskofusquebae,designedfortherefreshmentofLordMenteith;whileaninferiorservantmadesimilarpreparationsatthebottomofthetableforthebenefitofhisattendants。Thespacewhichintervenedbetweenthemwas,accordingtothemannersofthetimes,sufficientdistinctionbetweenmasterandservant,eventhoughtheformerwas,asinthepresentinstance,ofhighrank。

Meanwhiletheguestsstoodbythefire——theyoungnoblemanunderthechimney,andhisservantsatsomelittledistance。

"Whatdoyouthink,Anderson,"saidtheformer,"ofourfellow—

traveller?"

"Astoutfellow,"repliedAnderson,"ifallbegoodthatisupcome。Iwishwehadtwentysuch,toputourTeaguesintosomesortofdiscipline。"

"Idifferfromyou,Anderson,"saidLordMenteith;"IthinkthisfellowDalgettyisoneofthosehorse—leeches,whoseappetiteforbloodbeingonlysharpenedbywhathehassuckedinforeigncountries,heisnowreturnedtobattenuponthatofhisown。

Shameonthepackofthesemercenaryswordmen!theyhavemadethenameofScotthroughallEuropeequivalenttothatofapitifulmercenary,whoknowsneitherhonournorprinciplebuthismonth"spay,whotransfershisallegiancefromstandardtostandard,atthepleasureoffortuneorthehighestbidder;andtowhoseinsatiablethirstforplunderandwarmquartersweowemuchofthatcivildissensionwhichisnowturningourswordsagainstourownbowels。Ihadscarcepatiencewiththehiredgladiator,andyetcouldhardlyhelplaughingattheextremityofhisimpudence。"

"Yourlordshipwillforgiveme,"saidAnderson,"ifIrecommendtoyou,inthepresentcircumstances,toconcealatleastapartofthisgenerousindignation;wecannot,unfortunately,doourworkwithouttheassistanceofthosewhoactonbasermotivesthanourown。Wecannotsparetheassistanceofsuchfellowsasourfriendthesoldado。TousethecantingphraseofthesaintsintheEnglishParliament,thesonsofZeruiaharestilltoomanyforus。"

"Imustdissemble,then,aswellasIcan,"saidLordMenteith,"asIhavehithertodone,uponyourhint。ButIwishthefellowatthedevilwithallmyheart。"

"Ay,butstillyoumustremember,mylord,"resumedAnderson,"thattocurethebiteofascorpion,youmustcrushanotherscorpiononthewound——Butstop,weshallbeoverheard。"

Fromaside—doorinthehallglidedaHighlanderintotheapartment,whoseloftystatureandcompleteequipment,aswellastheeagle"sfeatherinhisbonnet,andtheconfidenceofhisdemeanour,announcedtobeapersonofsuperiorrank。Hewalkedslowlyuptothetable,andmadenoanswertoLordMenteith,who,addressinghimbythenameofAllan,askedhimhowhedid。

"Yemannaspeaktohere"ennow,"whisperedtheoldattendant。

ThetallHighlander,sinkingdownupontheemptysettlenextthefire,fixedhiseyesupontheredembersandthehugeheapofturf,andseemedburiedinprofoundabstraction。Hisdarkeyes,andwildandenthusiasticfeatures,boretheairofonewho,deeplyimpressedwithhisownsubjectsofmeditation,payslittleattentiontoexteriorobjects。Anairofgloomyseverity,thefruitperhapsofasceticandsolitaryhabits,might,inaLowlander,havebeenascribedtoreligiousfanaticism;butbythatdiseaseofthemind,thensocommonbothinEnglandandtheLowlandsofScotland,theHighlandersofthisperiodwererarelyinfected。Theyhad,however,theirownpeculiarsuperstitions,whichovercloudedthemindwiththick—comingfancies,ascompletelyasthepuritanismoftheirneighbours。

"Hislordship"shonour,"saidtheHighlandservantsidelinguptoLordMenteith,andspeakinginaverylowtone,"hislordshipmannaspeaktoAllanevennow,forthecloudisuponhismind。"

LordMenteithnodded,andtooknofarthernoticeofthereservedmountaineer。

"SaidInot,"askedthelatter,suddenlyraisinghisstatelypersonupright,andlookingatthedomestic——"saidInotthatfourweretocome,andherestandbutthreeonthehallfloor?"

"Introthdidyesaysae,Allan,"saidtheoldHighlander,"andhere"sthefourthmancomingclinkinginattheyette"ennowfromthestable,forhe"sshelledlikeapartan,wi"airnonbackandbreast,haunchandshanks。AndamItosetherchairupneartheMenteith"s,ordownwi"thehonestgentlemenatthefootofthetable?"

LordMenteithhimselfansweredtheenquiry,bypointingtoaseatbesidehisown。

"Andhereshecomes,"saidDonald,asCaptainDalgettyenteredthehall;"andIhopegentlemenswillalltakebreadandcheese,aswesayintheglens,untilbettermeatbeready,untiltheTiernachcomesbackfraethehillwi"thesoutherngentlefolk,andthenDugaldCookwillshowhimselfwi"hiskidandhillvenison。""

Inthemeantime,CaptainDalgettyhadenteredtheapartment,andwalkinguptotheseatplacednextLordMenteith,wasleaningonthebackofitwithhisarmsfolded。Andersonandhiscompanionwaitedatthebottomofthetable,inarespectfulattitude,untiltheyshouldreceivepermissiontoseatthemselves;whilethreeorfourHighlanders,underthedirectionofoldDonald,ranhitherandthithertobringadditionalarticlesoffood,orstoodstilltogiveattendanceupontheguests。

Inthemidstofthesepreparations,Allansuddenlystartedup,andsnatchingalampfromthehandofanattendant,helditclosetoDalgetty"sface,whileheperusedhisfeatureswiththemostheedfulandgraveattention。

"Bymyhonour,"saidDalgetty,halfdispleased,as,mysteriouslyshakinghishead,Allangaveupthescrutiny——"ItrowthatladandIwillkeneachotherwhenwemeetagain。"

MeanwhileAllanstrodetothebottomofthetable,andhaving,bytheaidofhislamp,subjectedAndersonandhiscompaniontothesameinvestigation,stoodamomentasifindeepreflection;

then,touchinghisforehead,suddenlyseizedAndersonbythearm,andbeforehecouldofferanyeffectualresistance,halfledandhalfdraggedhimtothevacantseatattheupperend,andhavingmadeamuteintimationthatheshouldthereplacehimself,hehurriedthesoldadowiththesameunceremoniousprecipitationtothebottomofthetable。TheCaptain,exceedinglyincensedatthisfreedom,endeavouredtoshakeAllanfromhimwithviolence;

but,powerfulashewas,heprovedinthestruggleinferiortothegiganticmountaineer,whothrewhimoffwithsuchviolence,thatafterreelingafewpaces,hefellatfulllength,andthevaultedhallrangwiththeclashofhisarmour。Whenhearose,hisfirstactionwastodrawhisswordandtoflyatAllan,who,withfoldedarms,seemedtoawaithisonsetwiththemostscornfulindifference。LordMenteithandhisattendantsinterposedtopreservepeace,whiletheHighlanders,snatchingweaponsfromthewall,seemedprompttoincreasethebroil。

"Heismad,"whisperedLordMenteith,"heisperfectlymad;thereisnopurposeinquarrellingwithhim。"

"IfyourlordshipisassuredthatheisNONCOMPOSMENTIS,"saidCaptainDalgetty,"thewhilkhisbreedingandbehaviourseemtotestify,themattermustendhere,seeingthatamadmancanneithergiveanaffront,norrenderhonourablesatisfaction。

But,bymysaul,ifIhadmyprovstntandabottleofRhenishundermybelt,Ishouldhivestoodotherwaysuptohim。Andyetit"sapityheshouldbesaeweakintheintellectuals,beingastrongpropermanofbody,fittohandlepike,morgenstern,oranyothermilitaryimplementwhatsoever。"[Thiswasasortofclubormace,usedintheearlierpartoftheseventeenthcenturyinthedefenceofbreachesandwalls。WhentheGermansinsultedaScotchregimentthenbesiegedinTrailsund,sayingtheyheardtherewasashipcomefromDenmarktothemladenwithtobaccopipes,"Oneofoursoldiers,"saysColonelRobertMunro,"showingthemovertheworkamorgenstern,madeofalargestockbandedwithiron,liketheshaftofahalberd,witharoundglobeattheendwithcrossironpikes,saith,"Hereisoneofthetobaccopipes,wherewithwewillbeatoutyourbrainswhenyouintendtostormus。""]

Peacewasthusrestored,andthepartyseatedthemselvesagreeablytotheirformerarrangement,withwhichAllan,whohadnowreturnedtohissettlebythefire,andseemedoncemoreimmersedinmeditation,didnotagaininterfere。LordMenteith,addressingtheprincipaldomestic,hastenedtostartsomethemeofconversationwhichmightobliterateallrecollectionofthefraythathadtakenplace。"Thelairdisatthehillthen,Donald,Iunderstand,andsomeEnglishstrangerswithhim?"
