ItappearedtobeanindicationofhisintensepreoccupationofmindthatheseemedunawareofLucy"slongtripsdownintothesage。ButBostilhadobservedthemlongbeforeHolleyandotherridershadapproachedhimwiththeinformation。

Theraceswerenowonlyafewdaysoff。PiutesandNavajoswerecampedoutonthesage,andhourlythenumbergrewasmorecamein。Theywerebuildingcedarsunshades。Columnsofbluesmokecurleduphereandthere。Mustangsandponiesgrazedeverywhere,andalineofIndiansextendedalongtheracecourse,wheretrialswerebeingheld。Thevillagewasfullofriders,horse-tradersandhunters,andranchers。Workontherangeshadpracticallystoppedforthetimebeing,andinanotherdayorsoeveryinhabitantofthecountrywouldbeinBostil"sFord。

Bostilwalkedintothevillage,grimlyconsciousthatthepresenceoftheIndiansandridersandhorses,theactionandcolorandbustle,thenearapproachofthegreatrace-day——thesethingsthatinformeryearshadbroughthimkeendelightandspeculation——hadsomehowlosttheirtang。Hehadchanged。

Somethingwaswronginhim。Buthemustgoamongthesevisitorsandwelcomethemasofold;hewhohadalwaysbeenthelifeoftheseracing-daysmustbeoutwardlythesame。AndthetaskwasalltheharderbecauseofthepleasureshownbyoldfriendsamongtheIndiansandtheridersatmeetinghim。Bostilknewhehadbeenacunninghorse-trader,buthehadlikewisebeenagoodfriend。ManyweretheridersandIndianswhoowedmuchtohim。Soeverywherehewashailedandbesieged,untilfinallytheoldexcitementofbettingandbanteringtookholdofhimandheforgothisbrooding。

Brackton"splace,asalways,wasaheadquartersforallvisitors。Macomberhadjustcomeinfullofenthusiasmandprideoverthehorsehehadentered,andhehadmoneytowager。TwoNavajochiefs,calledbywhitemenOldHorseandSilver,werethereforthefirsttimeinyears。Theywerereadytogamblehorseagainsthorse。CalBlinnandhisridersofDurangohadarrived;likewiseColson,Sticks,andBurthwait,oldfriendsandrivalsofBostil"s。

ForawhileBrackton"swasmerry。Therewassomedrinkingandmuchbetting。ItwascharacteristicofBostilthathewouldgiveanyoddsaskedontheKinginarace;and,furthermore,hewouldtakeanyendofwagersonotherhorses。Asfarashisownhorseswereconcernedhebetshrewdly,butinraceswherehishorsesdidnotfigureheseemedtofindfuninthebetting,whetherornothewon。
