Sheldonnodded。Heunderstood。ItwasthelossoftheMarthathathadbroughtonthefever。Thefeverwouldhavecomesoonerorlater,heknew;butherdisappointmenthadprecipitatedit。Helightedacigarette,andinthecurlingsmokeofitcaughtvisionsofhisEnglishmother,andwonderedifshewouldunderstandhowhersoncouldloveawomanwhocriedbecauseshecouldnotbeskipperofaschoonerinthecannibalisles。
CHAPTERXX——AMAN-TALK
Themostpatientmanintheworldispronetoimpatienceinlove——
andSheldonwasinlove。Hecalledhimselfanassascoreoftimesaday,andstrovetocontainhimselfbydirectinghismindinotherchannels,butmorethanascoreoftimeseachdayhisthoughtsrovedbackanddweltonJoan。Itwasaprettyproblemshepresented,andhewascontinuallydebatingwithhimselfastowhatwasthebestwaytoapproachher。
