AlthoughtheraysofanuncloudedsunwerehotintheSantaClararoadsandbyways,andthedry,bleacheddusthadbecomeanimpalpablepowder,theperspiringandparchedpedestrianwhorashlysoughtreliefintheshadeofthewaysideoakwasspeedilychilledtothebonebythenorthwesttrade-windsthatonthoseAugustafternoonssweptthroughthedefilesoftheCoastRange,andevenpenetratedthepastoralvalleyofSanJose。Theanomalyofstrawhatsandovercoatswiththeoccupantsofbuggiesandstationwagonswasthusaccountedfor,andevenintheshelteredgardenof"ElRosario"twoyounggirlsinlightsummerdresseshadthrownwrapsovertheirshouldersastheyloungeddownabroadrose-alleyatrightangleswiththedeep,longverandaofthecasa。Yet,inspiteofthechill,theoldSpanishhouseandgardenspresentedaluxurious,almosttropical,picturefromtheroadside。Banks,beds,andbowersofroseslenttheirnameandcolortothegrounds;

"MissYerba!"saidadry,masculinevoicefromtheveranda。
