MirrorPoolwasaquarterofamiledistantandwellguardedwithrocksanddeephiddenintrees;butalittlepathwayhadbeenmadetothewater"sedge,andthusthegirlshadeasyaccesstowhattheycalledTheMermaid"sBath。Abay-treewasadornedwithalittleredwoodsign,whichboreapictureofamermaid,drawnbyMargery,andbelowthenametheselinesinrusticletters:-

Laurahadnotlivedlongenoughinthewoodstoenjoythesecoldplunges;and,asheridealwasamarbletub,withscentedwater,andaFrenchmaidtoapplythesamewithavelvetsponge,itisnotmuchwonder。Sheinsistedthat,thoughitwasdoubtlessaveryromanticproceeding,thebottomandsidesofthenaturaltubwerequitetoorockyandroughforhertaste,andthatsheshouldbeinconstantterrorofsnakescurlingroundhertoes。
