Ontheotherhand,ithassometimesoccurredthatbelieversintheBiblehavebeenquitetooeagertoaccommodatethemselvestopurelypassingphasesofobjectiontoit。Themattermentionedamomentago,theexcisionofthesupernatural,isacaseinpoint。Theeasyandglibwayinwhichsomehavesoughttogetarounddifficulties,bytalkinginlargetermsabouttheprogressivenessoftherevelation,asthoughtheprogresswerefromerrortotruth,insteadoffromhalflighttofulllight,isanotherillustration。Thenimblewayinwhichwehaveturnedwhatisgivenashistoryintofiction,andallowedimaginationtoroamthroughtheBible,isanotherillustration。OneofourlaterwriterstellsthestoryofJonah,andsaysitsoundslikefiction;whynotcallitfiction?AnothertellsthestoryoftheexodusfromEgypt,andsaysitsoundslikefiction;whynotcallitfiction?
