Bydegreesthisnoiselessmelancholyunderminedtheoldgentleman,andhewell-nightottered。

Butoneday,callingsuddenlyonaneighborwithsixdaughters,heheardpealsoflaughter,andfoundRosatakingherfullshareofthesenselessmirth。Shepulledupshortatsightofhim,andcoloredhigh;butitwastoolate,forhelaunchedaknowinglookatheronthespot,andmutteredsomethingaboutsevenfoolishvirgins。

Hetookthefirstopportunity,whentheywerealone,andtoldherhewasgladtofindshewasonlydismalathome。

Abouttendaysafterthis,somethingoccurredthatalteredhermood。

Shebecamegraveandthoughtful,butnolongerlugubrious。Sheseemeddesiroustoatonetoherfatherforhavingdisturbedhischeerfulness。Shesmiledaffectionatelyonhim,andoftensatonastoolathisknee,andglidedherhandintohis。

Hewasnotalittlepleased,andsaidtohimself,"Sheiscomingroundtocommon-sense。"
