ForayearthebattlebetweentheSomersfactionandthegiantbutsolitaryRushbrookragedfiercely,withvaryingsuccess。IgrievetosaythattheprotegesandparasitesofMaecenasdesertedhiminabody;nay,theyopenlyallegedthatitwasthetrueartisticnatureandrefinementofSomersthathadalwaysattractedthem,andthatamanlikeRushbrook,whoboughtpicturesbytheyard,——

equallyoftheunknownstrugglingartistandthefamousmasters,——

wasnotruepatronofArt。Rushbrookmadenoattempttorecoverhislostprestige,andonce,whensqueezedintoatight"corner,"

Leyton。WhilerumorshadplayedfreelywiththerelationsofSomersandtheSignoraasthepossiblecauseoftherupturebetweenhimandRushbrook,nomentionhadeverbeenmadeofthenameofMissNevil。

Itwasrainingheavilyoneafternoon,whenMr。RushbrookdrovefromhisofficetohisSanFranciscohouse。Thefiercestruggleinwhichhewasengagedlefthimlittletimeforhospitality,andforthelasttwoweekshishousehadbeencomparativelydeserted。Hepassedthroughtheemptyrooms,changedinlittleexcepttheabsenceofsomevaluablemonstrositieswhichhadgonetoreplenishhiscapital。Whenhereachedhisbedroom,hepausedamomentattheopendoor。

"Yes,sir,"saidJames,appearingoutoftheshadow。
