Therewasalargehouse-partyatOldenhurstthatmorning。ButithadbeenapartofthehistoryoftheMainwaringstoacceptdefeatgallantlyandasbecametheirblood。SirPercival,——thesecondgentlemanontheleftasyouenteredthelibrary,——unhorsed,dyingonadistantmoor,withahandfuloffollowers,abandonedbyacharmingPrinceandamiserablecause,wasscarcelyagreaterherothanthisruinedbutundauntedgentlemanofeighty,enteringthebreakfast-roomafewhourslaterasjauntilyashisgoutwouldpermit,andconscientiouslydispensingthehospitalitiesofhiscrumblinghouse。Whenhehadarrangedafewpleasurepartiesforthedayandhimselfthoughtfullyanticipatedthedifferenttastesofhisguests,heturnedtoLadyMainwaring。

shoulderedman,whowascarryingatravelling-bagandanumbrellainhishand。Droppingintoanarm-chairbeforethecurtain,hewavedawaythefootman,who,evennow,mechanicallyrepeatedapreviouslyvainattempttorelievethestrangerofhisluggage。
