ItwasalittleafterdaybreaknextmorningthatMainwaringawokefromthefirstunrefreshingnighthehadpassedatTheLookout。Hewassofeverishandrestlessthathedressedhimselfatsunrise,andcautiouslysteppedoutuponthestillsilentveranda。ThechairswhichheandLouiseMacyhadoccupiedwerestill,itseemedtohim,conspicuouslyconfidentialwitheachother,andheseparatedthem,butashelookeddownintotheGreatCanyonathisfeethewasconsciousofsomeundefinablechangeintheprospect。Aslightmistwasrisingfromthevalley,asifitwerethelastoflastnight"sillusions;thefirstlevelsunbeamswereobtrusivelysearching,andthekeenmorningairhadadrylypracticalinsistencewhichirritatedhim,untilalightfootsteponthefartherendoftheverandacausedhimtoturnsharply。

Mainwaring,alwayseasilygentleandfamiliarwithchildrenandhisinferiors,lookedathimwithanencouragingsmile。Richelieu——foritwashe——advancedgravelyandheldouthishand,withthecameoringapparent。Mainwaring,withequalgravity,shookitwarmly,andremovedhishat。Richelieu,keenlyobservant,didthesame。
